A dry stone wall is a wall built/constructed without using a binder like mortar. This means that the stones are not fixed together with any binder like mortar. The stones lock themselves into a fix position by the excellent workmanship of a stonemason and with the help from the earth’s gravity the wall remains solid and stable.
A stone wall with mortar is a wall that is built with mortar hence the stones are fixed together with mortar. A stone wall with mortar always needs a concrete foundation to lay upon.
Stone veneer is a thin stone that is fixed onto a building, mostly on fasads that has no load bearing on the building. Mostly it is made for decorative purposes BUT if natural stone is used, the fasad and the rest of the building will have a long-lasting cover and will not have to be maintained. It is highly durable from weather and protects the fasad for many years to come. The stone is often quarried into consistent size and thickness and is fixed to the fasad/building using either dowel, kerf, or undercut anchoring systems as well as direct fixing. Different types of stone can be used like limestone, granite, sandstone, slate, marble and more.
When we build stone walls, either stone walls with mortar or dry stone walls, we mostly use either fieldstone or rock cut.
Fieldstone is a natural stone that nature created for many years. It is often located in fields and farmers used to pick this stone from the fields because they where causing a problem at harvest because the farm machinery would be damage during harvest. The farmers used this stone to build walls around their property, which is why dry stone walls made from fieldstone is common around old farms. The fieldstone is round and smooth, this because nature (wind, water and materials) has grinded it for many years.
Rock Cut is a stone made when excavating stone from a quarry. When you blast the mountain in order to excavate the stone, peace’s of stone are left on the ground which is called rock cut. This stone is then used for stone walls, especially dry stone walls. The stone is pointy and sharp in contradiction to the fieldstone. This makes the stone good for building dry stone walls because it locks/fixes the stone together better then a round/grinded stone like fieldstone.
We work mainly with granite, limestone, slate, marble, sandstone and porcelain tiles.
Granite is a hard and durable stone that is very good for harsh weather conditions in Scandinavia. It handles rain, cold and salt very well, which makes it optimal for outdoor purposes.
Limestone is besides sandstone the softest natural stone available. Limestone is made by shells from fossil and lime sludge, this means that fossils like shells and corals can be found in the stone. When limestone is exposed to high temperature and pressure in the earth’s crust it transforms into marble. Limestone is sensitive for salts and synthetic detergents which means it’s not optimal to use this stone in bathrooms, kitchens or around a pool area. Limestone needs to be scrubbed with stone soap a couple of times every year. The stone soap forms together with the stone, lime soap, which gives the stone a good protection without sealing the stones poor’s.
Slate is the most durable and long-lasting natural stone available on the market. It is a fat, flexible stone that can be cut into thin layers which makes it good for stone veneer and slate roofing. This stone is optimal for Scandinavian outdoor conditions, in any way you want it.
Marble is the hardest stone available which means it cracks easier then granite. As Granite marble is a very durable long-lasting stone but when polished, the surface gets scratched easy which makes this stone more suitable for indoors purposes like floors and countertops.
Sandstone is a very soft and porous stone, which makes it light and easy to work with. This stone is not recommended as paving stone because of its softer character, mostly this stone is used for stone veneer on fasads or open fireplaces.
Porcelain Tiles (Granitkeramik in Swedish), is the most durable artificial stone available. It’s made out of ceramic and porcelain and has a very low water absorption and is relatively slip free and easy to clean. This makes a porcelain tile optimal for use in very hard conditions like public areas like train stations and airports. We recommend using these types of tiles around pool areas and in the kitchen and bathrooms. Alongside slate this is the best option for long-lasting construction and overall use both indoors and outdoors.
